Let's Get Started

Before You Arrive

The journey to Australia starts long before you board the plane. Being prepared will make your arrival smooth and stress-free. This guide covers the most important things you need to arrange before you leave home.

Your Visa and Documents

Ensure your Student Visa (Subclass 500) is finalised and that you have all your essential documents, including your passport, Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) details. Keep physical and digital copies safe.

What to Pack

Pack for Australia’s climate but remember you can buy most things here. Bring essential documents, any prescribed medication with a doctor’s note, and a power adaptor for Australia’s plugs.

Arranging Your Finances

Plan your first few weeks of expenses. Be aware of the money you can bring into the country and have some cash for immediate needs like transport from the airport.

Accommodation

Arrange your short-term accommodation for at least your first two weeks. This gives you time to find a permanent place after you arrive. Research your university's student accommodation, homestay options, or private rentals.

Arrival at the Airport

Know what to expect when you land. The Department of Home Affairs has specific rules about what can be brought into the country. Make sure you declare all food and certain items to avoid issues.

Living in Australia

Australia is more than a study destination; it's a new home. This guide provides practical advice on everything you need to know, from transport to staying safe.

Understanding Australian Culture

Australia is a multicultural society known for its relaxed, friendly culture. Australians often use informal language and have a strong emphasis on a healthy work-life balance. Embrace the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

Transport and Travel

Major cities have excellent public transport systems, including trains, buses, and trams. Each state has a different system (e.g., Opal in Sydney, Myki in Melbourne), and we recommend getting a student card early to access discounts.

Healthcare and Support

As an international student, you are required to have OSHC. This covers medical costs while you are here. In case of an emergency, call 000 for police, fire, or ambulance services. For non-emergencies, you can visit a local doctor.

Jobs and Work Rights

Your Student Visa allows you to work for up to 48 hours per fortnight to support your studies. Your work rights will be clearly stated on your visa. You must be aware of these conditions to ensure you are compliant. We have a dedicated page on this for more detailed information.

Staying Safe

Australia is a safe country, but it is important to be aware of your surroundings. Stay in well-lit areas at night, and be mindful of sun safety with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. If you ever feel unsafe, contact your university's security or the police.
